What is the Royal Treasure Museum?

Royal Treasure Museum, known in Portuguese as Museu Tesouro Real, is a museum displaying the permanent collection of former assets of the Portuguese Royal Family. It showcases art, jewels, gold, silverware, medals, ceremonial items, royal personal belongings and many more.

Why should you visit the Royal Treasure Museum?

The museum has 11 exhibition areas on 3 floors, which include:

– Gold and Diamonds from Brazil
– Coins and Medals from the Crown
– Jewels
– Orders of Knighthood and Orders of Merit
– Royal Insignia
– The Crown’s Silver
– Private Collections
– Diplomatic Gifts
– The Royal Chapel
– Royal Table
– The Treasure’s Travel

Some of the favourite highlights are the world’s second biggest gold nugget, the only complete Germain’s sterling serving set in the world, and golden roses offered by Pope Gregory XVI in 1842, blessed by popes every year.

Before you enter the museum you need to go through a security check which is fast yet quite strict. Your belongings will be scanned and you will be asked about any liquids you are bringing in.

How to get to the Royal Treasure Museum?

Royal Treasure Museum is located in Ajuda National Palace, right on the border with Belem. Getting there is very simple through public transport.

1. Starting at Praça do Comércio: get on route 760 that will drop you off right at the palace (Lg. Ajuda (Palacio) stop). This trip will take about 30 minutes.

2. Starting from Jeronimos Monastery: walk 2 minutes to a bus stop across the street from Pasteis de Belem, then get on route 729 that will drop you off right at the palace (Palacio Nacional Ajuda stop). This trip will take about 10 minutes.

Hours of operation are 10 AM to 6 PM everyday.

What is the cost of the Royal Treasure Museum?

Tickets for adults (25-64 years old) cost 11 Euro, for youth (7-24 years old) cost 7.50 Euro, and for seniors (65+ years old) cost 7.50 Euro. Children below the age of 6 receive free entry.

How long do you need to visit the Royal Treasure Museum?

You will need approximately from 45 minutes to 1 hour to go through the museum. I would personally allocate more time if you’re the kind of person who likes to read notes about every single piece – there are many displays to see!

Is visiting the Royal Treasure Museum worth it?

If you like the type of museums with displays of jewels, ceremonial items and royal personal belongings, then this is a place for you!

Personally, I did not find it as interesting as some other places I have seen. Yes, some of the collections displayed are very interesting, but many of them I passed after taking a quick look. I don’t think paying 10 Euro for entry is worth it, especially that Ajuda National Palace is located right beside it which is more unique to see and has cheaper admission prices. Overall, if you’re on a budget then I would skip this place.

However, if you purchased Lisboa Card then you are free to enter. In this case, I would definitely come take a look if you’re spending the day in Belem and are interested in seeing Ajuda National Palace (which I 100% recommend!). Keep in mind that the palace is closed on Wednesdays, so choose a day when both of these attractions are open.
