What is the National Coach Museum?

National Coach Museum, known in Portuguese as Museu Nacional dos Coches, is a museum showcasing one of the finest collections of horse-drawn carriages from the 17^th, 18^th and 19^th centuries. It is one of the most visited museums in Portugal.

Why should you visit the National Coach Museum?

You will have a chance to see an extensive collection of coaches, carriages, berlins, sedan chairs, and even child-sized vehicles, belonging to the Portuguese royal family and nobility between the 17-19^th centuries.

The styles of the carriages differ immensely from each other depending on the time period and location they were made in. There are some from Italy, Portugal, France, Spain, Austria and England.

One of the biggest highlights of the museum are horse-drawn carriages that belonged to Philip II of Spain, which are the oldest in the collection.

How to get to the National Coach Museum?

National Coach Museum is located in the Belém area of Lisbon. It’s very close to Jeronimos Monastery, which makes it for a very convenient stop around the major attractions.

1. Starting at Praça do Comércio: get on route 15 and get off at the Belém (Museu Coches) stop. From there it’s only a quick 2-3 minute walk to the museum. This trip will take about 25 minutes.

2. Starting at Praça do Comércio: get on route 728 and get off at the Estacao Fluvial Belém stop, right across from the museum. This trip will take about 20 minutes.

3. Starting from Jeronimos Monastery: walk 2 minutes to a bus stop across the street from Pasteis de Belem, then get on route 728 that will drop you off right at the museum (Estacao Fluvial Belém stop). This trip will take about 4 minutes. If you don’t want to take public transport, then you can walk there in only 10 minutes.

Hours of operation are 10 AM to 6 PM everyday, except for Mondays. Last entry is at 5:30 PM.

What is the cost of the National Coach Museum?

Tickets for adults cost 15 Euro. Children below the age of 12 receive free entry.

How long do you need to visit the National Coach Museum?

You will need approximately from 45 minutes to 1 hour to go through everything. The museum wasn’t busy at all during my visit. It was mostly filled with students taking guided tours on school trips.

Is visiting the National Coach Museum worth it?

I would definitely recommend visiting the National Coach Museum! It’s such a unique place with the most wonderful collection. All items are surprisingly very well preserved and each vehicle has a short explanation attached to it to learn the history behind it.

It was an enormous joy to stroll around the museum while being so close to all the displays. It felt like being transformed back in time.

The National Coach Museum is a perfect place to visit on your day in Belém. The proximity to other attractions makes it a perfect spot, so you can be highly time efficient. If you have the Lisboa Card, then definitely check out the museum to make the best out of your purchase.

Before or after visiting, make sure to take a walk around the area to explore the beauty of this neighbourhood. There is a small yet beautiful park just across the street called Jardim Alfonso de Albuquerque.
